2018 in Review

PREVENTION: CAMPUS ED

In 2018, more than 5,000 students were educated about the dangers of sex trafficking and how to reduce their risk of victimization. Students between 7th and 12th grades received this education in health class on their school campuses across Stanislaus County. The trainings were made possible by partnerships with Modesto City Schools and Ceres Unified School District and would not have happened without the dedication of our campus ed leader, Michell Camacho and the volunteers that have supported her throughout the year.

Out of 181 students surveyed at two Modesto high schools, 177 reported feeling empowered by these presentations. Here is some feedback we received from these high school students:

“I feel the presentation was very educational and I wasn’t aware of the many intricacies of sex trafficking.”

“I learned how to stay safe.”

“I feel like the presentation helped a lot of us understand and be aware about this topic because no one really talks about it.”

“Because of this I went home and told my mom, then my mom had a family meeting and we all talked about it.”

We look forward to seeing the impact this program will have in 2019.

RESTORATION: JUST HIS HOUSE

Our restoration team of staff and volunteers have served an additional 63 survivors of sex trafficking and their families over the course of this year. We have coordinated risk assessments, counseling sessions, parent partnership meetings, and mentoring for these survivors and their families. Our day center Just His House, has created a safe space for survivors to learn, grow, and bond. The result is a group of young women that are continuing to learn what it feels like to be empowered and empower others through God’s grace and love. They have the chance to take part in  Bible study, art therapy, cooking class, group outings, movie nights, and more. We have celebrated with them in the wins and prayed with them in the struggles. Through it all, Without Permission strives to be a constant source of love and support for them in this time of total life restoration.

FOUNDER’S MESSAGE

It is that time of year where we at Without Permission reflect back through the journey of hope we have traveled in 2018, and we have much to be grateful for! Glory to God in the highest as we have continued to bring Jesus to answer the cry of those who have suffered at the hands of sex traffickers. Through revelation, sheer determination, and an amazingly supportive community, Without Permission survivors and their families are prevailing over fear, despair and shame.

We continue to spend our days in this battle in courtrooms, living rooms, coffee shops, and schools fighting hard to regain freedom for those imprisoned in sex trafficking and to prevent a new generation from becoming victims.

OUR MISSION: Without Permission exists to lead the church and community into the battle that will end sex trafficking.

OUR VISION: Through collaborative partnerships in the Central Valley and across the action, Without Permission confronts the culture that promotes sex trafficking. We restore the victimized, educate our youth to prevent victimization, and attack the lies that drive the demand.

Prevention & Restoration

All summer and throughout September, Without Permission has been involved in outreach and prevention. We have had volunteers set up display tables in Modesto and Manteca. Debbie has led trainings in Salida, Patterson, and several different places in Modesto. Our staff has also been participating in staff development opportunities in order to be best equipped to lead the church and community in the battle to end sex trafficking.

At Just his House, the restoration team has been hard at work building relationships and exploring new and creative ways to facilitate healing for our survivors. They had a great Next STEP Retreat with meals donated by volunteers. Last week, they hosted a guest speaker that took the time to speak to her own experiences as a survivor and parent of a survivor of sex trafficking. It was a powerful experience for all that were in attendance.

COMMUNITY BRUNCH

Thank you to the Costa Family Foundation for hosting an incredible Community Brunch and honoring Without Permission!

We had a great time sharing the love of Jesus with all of the guests that visited our room at the 2018 Community Brunch fundraiser! We were able to inform over 1000 people as they visited our display table and watched the video playing in our room. Many of the guests had never heard of Without Permission, so it was a privilege to get to tell them what we are doing to fight sex trafficking in our community.

This could not have been accomplished without the support of our many donors and volunteers! We had many students from the Central Valley High School Interact Club volunteer their time bright and early on Sunday morning to help serve food and bus tables. We also had new WP volunteers serving alongside those that have been faithful to WP for years. Thank you to everyone involved, including those that have worked tirelessly to put the event together during the last few months.

Another highlight of the event was the impact wall in our room. Spanning the wall on either side of our informational video were silhouettes of young women and quotations from youth in our community. Some were statements that survivors have confided in us, some were feedback from students that participated in our campus ed program. They were all a reminder of the positive impact WP has had on our youth. The silhouettes, designed and created by a survivor parent, were decorated with paintings from our art therapy at Just His House. As the girls poured paint onto the canvas, they were encouraged to let go and let God. The whole day was a great representation of the many ways that Without Permission impacts and serves the community and its youth.

FOUNDER'S MESSAGE

In one of A.W. Tozer’s writings titled The Importance of Direction he said, “If we should seem at times to be a bit slow, let it be remembered that we do know the direction we are called to go, and as long as we have followed the original urge we have been blessed with success beyond our best expectation.”

Have you ever struggled with slow beginnings? Have you ever wondered “how is this ‘thing’ ever going to make a difference in my city?” Have you ever thought “am I still doing what I dreamed of doing?” Well I have. Over the years, I have had many conflicting thoughts and moments in the building of Without Permission. I have however, never questioned the heart of God to call me to such a work for His kingdom. As God has woven together the ministry and reach of our great team, I am encouraged with the pace He has moved us. As the days have turned to years, I see the wisdom of His timing and the team’s response to human trafficking. I am reminded that all the work to bring victims and families to hope and healing comes through people, people with lives, families, needs, struggles and disappointments, too.

I share this thought with you to say how great it is to be part of this journey with you all. We are making a difference, and we intend to be here for a long time. Your commitment over the past 8 years to volunteer, give, serve and sacrifice have been an encouragement to me to keep believing in the call of God to end the culture of human trafficking here at home. Your investment in WP no matter how small or great has kept a slow, steady, faithful, intentional, local response to the victims and the families of sex trafficking. Remember “we do know the direction we are called to go, and as long as we have followed the original urge we have been blessed with success beyond our best expectation.”

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” Zech. 4:10
